Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the spread of AI technology could make the job optional in 10 to 20 years, though he cautioned there’s a lot of work to be done between now and then.
He is a billionaire Elon Musk On Wednesday, he said that while Trump’s accounts that will be introduced next year are a good move, he does not think it will be necessary to save money with “higher incomes around the world” in the future.
Musk responded to a post by investor Ray Dalio, who announced that he is following Michael and Susan Dell in donating funds to help seed the so-called Trump accounts, which are new savings and investment accounts created by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act for newborns and young Americans.
“Of course it’s a good move by Dells, but there will be no poverty in the future so there is no need to save money,” Musk wrote in a post on X, his social network. “There will be higher revenues globally.”
Musk has said many times that he thinks artificial intelligence (AI) and robots will end poverty and the need to work, creating a global level of wealth.

The Tesla boss spoke at the Viva Technology conference in Paris in May 2024, where he explained in response to a question about whether he was worried about losing his job due to AI which he believed to be the likely outcome. AI and robots it will eliminate the need to work.
“In an ideal scenario, probably none of us will have a job,” Musk said. “There will be a global high wage – not a universal basic wage – a global high wage. There will be no shortage of goods or services.”

Musk said at the time that he thought there was an 80% chance that AI would lead to such a situation there people will not need work and they will have everything they need.
“The question will really have a meaning, of how – if a computer can do it, and robots can do everything better than you … does your life have a meaning? That will really be a question in that critical situation, and in the worst case, all bets are off when we are in deep trouble,” said Musk.

He also said that he thinks in the long run that “any job a person does will be a choice,” and that job will serve as a hobby.
“If you want to do work as a hobby, you can do work, but other than that, AI and robots will provide whatever goods and services you want,” Musk said.

Musk has made some bold predictions related to the revolutionary nature of AI and robots, including one made in November that their widespread deployment is the only thing that can solve the problem. The US debt crisis and that “money will stop working in the future.”
