UAE passenger rail network: Etihad Rail unveils comprehensive national plan linking 11 cities ahead of 2026 launch

Etihad Rail has announced the full details of the UAE’s national passenger rail network, marking a milestone in the country’s transport and infrastructure development.

The project will deliver the UAE’s first fully integrated national passenger rail system, connecting 11 cities and regions through strategically located stations.

The network is designed to strengthen connectivity across the Emirates and provide safe, reliable travel services for citizens, residents and visitors.

Etihad Rail in the UAE

In early 2025, Etihad Rail announced the first four passenger stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah. The company has now confirmed the remaining planned stations in Al Sila’, Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Mezaira’a, Al Faya and Al Dhaid. These stations will operate in phases.

Azza AlSuwaidi, Deputy CEO, Etihad Rail Mobility, said: “Our plans to introduce passenger services on all national rail lines by 2026 reflect our visionary leadership to build an integrated transport system that supports the economic and social fabric of the UAE.

“The passenger rail network will serve as the foundation of the UAE’s national transport system, supporting the country’s long-term development and strengthening connectivity across its Emirates.

“And it builds on our proven success since 2023 in running the national railway division of freight. This milestone is the result of cooperation between all partners and stakeholders, fueled by the country’s unique talent and supported by global best practices.

“Similarly, we have equipped the network with next-generation vessels and advanced technology, in cooperation with leading international operators, to ensure the highest levels of quality, reliability and safety.”

Highlighting the project’s national identity and long-term vision, he said: “Our trains will have a clear Emirati identity that strengthens national unity, while serving as a long-term investment in the country’s transport and infrastructure sectors.

“These strategic projects will boost domestic tourism and establish a new regional standard for sustainable, people-oriented mobility, improving community well-being and improving quality of life.”

A seamless passenger experience

The trains are designed to provide a modern and comfortable travel experience, featuring safe and sturdy seats, modern interior designs, full Wi-Fi coverage and individual power outlets in every seat. The services will operate on a precise and regular schedule, providing a reliable alternative to road travel and helping to reduce congestion between cities.

Eng. Mohammed Alshehii, Senior Project Manager at Etihad Rail, confirmed that passenger services will be officially launched in 2026. In its first phase, the network will connect 11 cities and areas “carefully selected among key areas such as Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah and the Al Hilah area.”

Alshehii said: “Our trains are designed to provide a reliable, less crowded alternative to travel between places, with a focus on reducing journey times. Ten of the 13 trains in our fleet have arrived, having been tested and approved according to the highest international standards of safety and quality.

“Each train can accommodate 400 passengers and will be operated using the latest systems to ensure reliability and safety.

“Our services will be seamlessly integrated into the wider transport network, with stations linked to other modes of transport.”

National impact

Commenting on the scale of the project, Alshehii said: “This achievement is the result of three years of planning, design, and delivery, with a total of 24.5m working hours and the involvement of over 7,000 professionals and workers.”

Apart from travel, the passenger train network is expected to bring wider national benefits, including increasing domestic tourism, supporting sustainable transport goals, helping efforts to reduce emissions, and strengthening social and economic ties between the Emirates by making the UAE more connected and accessible.
