But China has threatened and implemented stricter export controls on common world goods and related goods, using them as a pretext for trade and geopolitical negotiations.
Because these minerals are so sensitive, export controls or embargoes (like China in 2025) could cripple industries in the US, Japan, or Europe.
So what are President Trump and his team doing? At least four major deals are in Australia, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Plus President Trump gets the EU, and partners to change their world that refused to give up chains with Australia, Canada and Southeast Asia.

Just this month, President Trungale signed an agreement with Australia and Prime Minister Anthony Albanenese for critical minerals and unconventional chains, using at least $1 billion each for projects worth $8.5 billion. He also struck the US-Japan Rare-Earth Carres Partnerbal with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

And the President recently signed a comprehensive trade and critical minerals deal with the Southeast Asian countries of Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam. There are also new projects being rolled out in Texas, Canada and Africa. And the EU’s Sensitive Materials Act and the US Data Protection Act support domestic processing.
