“The Attorney General made a very strong case for the need for the President to be strong,” he said, adding that opposing attorneys fell flat on their faces. ”
Bessent declined to outline an emergency plan if the justices rule in the antitrust case, saying “We’re not going to discuss it right now,” but said he’s confident the court will uphold the tax.
He described the payments as a “shiny ice cube,” which first protects US industry, then melts away as production and balance is restored.
The secretary also mocked the plaintiffs who challenged the fee, saying “They are probably ashamed” and “do not understand the underlying economics.”

Bessent pointed to an exchange from Justice Brett Kavaneugh, who asked if the prodigals were really arguing that the President could impose a 100% embargo, but not 1% of the tax that said the weakness of their case.
“Our trading partners have been doing this to us for decades,” Sessent said, rejecting the idea that Thombisa buyers are not buying. “If tariffs really hurt consumers’ wallets, other countries won’t continue to use them.”

“If you want to talk about ‘life and death,’ let’s talk about FENDANTL taxes,” he said. “They brought the Chinese to the negotiating table … for the first time, the Chinese agreed to work with the US on chemical precursors.”
Bessent said the administration will continue to connect trade, tax, and energy policy as part of what he calls “common prosperity.”
