Top 40 airports face 10% flight cuts due to government shutdown

Forty of the busiest airlines in the US will see a 10% flight reduction starting Friday after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced this week that it will force the reduction of flights due to the air shutdown.

The shutdown, the longest in US history, has forced 13,000 truck drivers and 50,000 Transportation Development managers to work without pay.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Wednesday the cuts could be reversed if Democrats agree to reopen the government.

While the FAA has yet to make an official government announcement, the Associated Press on Thursday reported a list of airlines expected to be affected.

Tens of thousands of flights have been delayed since the shutdown began due to a lack of comprehensive traffic control. Airlines say at least 3.2 million travelers have already been affected by the lack of air traffic control.

The decision to cut service comes weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, always among the busiest travel times of the year.
