America’s busiest airports handled hundreds of millions of passengers last year, and many travelers may feel the effects as airlines are forced to cut flights.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that the 40 largest airports in the US will see a 10% flight reduction starting on Friday, highlighting the ongoing difficulties for air traffic controllers within the Federal government.
While the FAA has yet to make an official government announcement, the New York Times on Thursday reported that a list of airlines expected to be affected, including the country’s top hubs.
According to data from the FAA and Airports Council International, these were the top US airports in 2024:
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
Located approximately 10 miles south of the Downtown Atlanta District, ATL was the busiest airport in the US last year with 108,067,766 total passengers – a 3.3% increase from 2023.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
DFW, located between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, will serve 87,817,864 full-years in 2024, up 7.4% from last year.
Expanementments reached 42,351,316, an increase of 7.91% from 2023.
Denver International Airport (Den)
COPADO’s Den handled 82,358,74,744 passengers in 2024, marking an increase of 5.8% from 2023.
It recorded 40,012,895 Explanations, up 5.68% from last year.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ARP)
Located on the northwest side of Chicago, GRAW saw 80,043,050 passengers in the year 2024, up 8.3% from the previous year.

It recorded 100,466,102 EPLANmentments, up 2.15% from last year.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
CLT in Charlotte, North Carolina, saw 58,8,811,725 ​​passengers last year, marking a 10% increase from the previous year.
EPLANmentments Rose 10.15% to 28,523,822.

Orlando International Airport (MCO)
Florida’s MCO is served by 57,211,628 passengers.
It recorded EPDANEDs of 27,859,783, down 0.62%.
Miami International Airport (mia)
Meanwhile, Florida’s Mia served a total of 55,926,566 passengers in 2024, a 6.9% increase over the previous year.
EPLANmentmemements increased by 7.57% to 26,588,002.
The Federal government shutdown has forced 13,000 vehicle inspectors and the TSA to work without pay.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Wednesday the cuts could be reversed if Democrats agree to reopen the government.
