Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy It came out in 2004 when I was a sophomore in high school, and its quotes replaced Dave Chappelle’s Rick James and Lil Jon skits almost every night. Suddenly, everyone I didn’t know was “stuck with a glass,” “not embarrassed, but actually impressed,” and they all “love the lamp.” We all had the time of our lives singing lines from the movie while doing Ron Burgundy impressions. 60 percent of the time, we laughed the whole time.
2013’s Anchorman: The Legend Continues I didn’t have the same impact from my place in the scene because my friends and I were older. Between getting married, having children, and traveling abroad, we could gather to quote movies an nauseam upon their release. The Anchorman feel like a traditional farmer, when Anchorman 2 He felt like he never thought, which is a shame because I think it’s actually a better movie.
Critics seem to agree with them, given that the first film has a score of 66 points against 74 percent for Rotten Tomatoes. More AnCoRient than before, anchorman 2 may be out of date with its themes but it carries the same sense of humor that made the first film a commercial success.
The legend continues
Anchorman 2 He takes four years after the events of the first film, regenerates us old and somehow don reamber burgundy (will wake up). CO-anclaing issues with his wife, Veronica Golingstone (Christina Applegate), Ron quickly found a real dose when he encouraged the retirement canal. When Ron is approached by Freddie Shapp (Dylan Baker) to join his new network, the Global News Network (GNN), he decides to get the team back together.
Freddie’s vision is simple: 24/7 news coverage. The problem is that filling the airwaves with non-stop programming proves to be a daunting task where journalistic integrity should be the standard. Fortunately for Freddie, Ron has no talent for bending the truth, throwing in hearsay and speculation, and pieces of fluff at an alarming rate to keep the audience riveted.
With the help of field reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), SportsCAST brand CHAMPER (David Koechner), and WEAPTICT anchor TAMPLAND (Steve Carell), the first team controls the ratings, quickly becoming GNN’s dream team. Their success, of course, frustrates Veronica, who still believes in the discipline and dignity of real journalism.
Truth has consequences
Combining the same developmental strengths as the first film, Anchorman 2’s The humor is in top form as its fires of throwing off one-liners into the impossible. Beneath the humor and silliness, however, lies a biting critique of the 24 news cycle we all live with today. When the business supports this legitimate story that Ron and his team want to broadcast, this film forces us to face the false reality that stories have evolved for entertainment. Corporate greed includes headlines, and stories that make money are more important than stories that matter most.
As heavy as that sounds, Anchorman 2 Never losing sight of what made the first film work, it leans fully into the absurdity of the absurd while upping the ante for every comical situation. Enemies become friends, friends become enemies, and Ron begins dating his dark-skinned boss, Linda Jackson (Meagan Good), only to destroy her reputation with her family after she tries to speak ill of him at the dinner table. Act three brings another Rival Royale of the highest Bar Royale, and even mantooth (Vince Vaughn) returns to defend his mother’s honor. Dorothy Mantooth is still a saint, after all.
Instead of relying on lazy callbacks, nothing here feels callless. Standard bits are reviewed but treated as long-lasting bits rather than cheap references. The humor feels earned, the chemistry is sharp, and the characters get to stretch new, absurd territory that makes the sequel a follow-up to what’s to come.
Powerful, memorable advice is likely to be overlooked
If you are like me and only gave Anchorman 2 A classic watch when it first came out, it’s worth checking out. It captures everything that made it a cultural original but ups the ante by telling a less cohesive story about literary dialogue and ego arguments. It does exactly what a good sequel should: it takes established characters, puts them in a new world with high stakes, and lets them fail creatively in the most fun ways.
Anchorman 2 they depended on the madness of their time and in a way they feel good now thanks to their satire. Not only does it hold, but it actually comes out real.
