The US Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Thursday that it has helped to restructure the “dramatic” pay at Amtrak – It is being put under the Biden Administration – to $900 bonuses for more than 18,000 employees.
The DOT said it reached an agreement with Amtrak executives and Amtrak executives to replace about half of Amtrak’s leadership bonuses.
“Due to lobbying by the Trump administration, end-of-year bonuses will now go to 18,000 more employees than are limited to management positions,” Mark Wallace, President of Boolean Locomotive Engineers and Trainers, said in a statement.
“This is long overdue recognition of rail maintenance workers moving in the right direction.”

In a POST to X Friday, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy echoed the announcement, noting “Christmas comes before the start” for Amtrak workers receiving bonuses.
“The Trump administration is bringing in lower costs and bigger paychecks,” Duffy said.

“Under the Trump Administration, [DOT] The Biden-Buttigieg ERA bonus structures Amtrak’s management team that led to higher pay for top employees, “the agency said.” Under Secretary Duffy, [DOT] will rebuild these standards to be more competitive to ensure that workers are well served. “
Earlier this year, Duffy similarly criticized the Biden Administration, particularly former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, for leaving behind an “unprecedented backlog” of critical infrastructure safety improvements across the country.

A spokesman for Buttigieg, the Democratic candidate for President, dismissed criticism of the dot at the time as “absurd.”
