The CPSC is recalling above-ground pools because of the high risk of drowning in children

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled 13,000 above-ground pools due to a “drowning hazard.”
The recall of Dec. 18 affects approximately 13,400 Blue Wave pools and 80 SerenLife Home brand pools, defined as 48 inches in length or longer.
The CPSC said it identified a design flaw in both products. The pressure belt that wraps around the outside of the ponds can be used as a stop, the agency said. This feature allows children to climb into the pool even when there is no ladder, increasing the risk of unsupervised access to the water.
“The pools recalled above contain a compression belt (also called a tightening belt) that wraps around the pool without vertical support poles, and may create a stop, allowing the child to reach the pool and drown,” the recall says of both products.

No injuries were reported in connection with the returned products. However, Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman said such design flaws in above-ground pools have caused “an increasing number of deaths” over the years.
“Today marks the recall of approximately 13,500 additional Chinese-made ponds related to a hazardous material that has resulted in nine deaths over the past 15 years,” Feldman said in a statement.
“The previous leadership of the CPSC refused to take this danger seriously, despite the clear evidence of the dangers associated with these pools and the increasing death toll on their watch. Not anymore. Under the new leadership, the CPSC is committed to confronting the leading killer of children: drowning. This action follows the major recall of above-ground pools in July 2025 and the new protecting publication of protecting children from the worst product accidents must always be one of the things CPSC priorities.”
He urged the families not to wait until it is time to swim to fix this issue, he said, “families should stop using these pools immediately.
