Treasury Secretary Scott Besslent said Wednesday that if the high court strikes down an important part of the Trump administration Tax regime It would be “the loss of the American people.”
Bessent spoke at the New York Times Dealbook paid conference and spoke about the Supreme Court hearing on the tariffs imposed by the President under the International Emergency Response Act (ieepta). Federal courts have struck down Ieeepa’s prices, prompting management to appeal to Supreme Court.
He said he was ‘optimistic’ about the administration finding a positive outcome, although he warned that the impact of the decision on the cost of tax rates should ultimately hurt Americans.
“Everybody says it’s going to be a loss for the administration. I think it’s going to be a loss for the American people,” Bessyent said.

Bessent also discussed the potential impact of businesses seeking a refund of the fees they paid if the Ieepta Court found the prices illegal, noting that the camp filed a lawsuit in International Commercial Court.
“I just saw that Costco is going to put in a refund. Okay, tell me what kind of refund lowered their price,” it’s a reduction, right?
Costco’s lawsuit argues that the Ieeeepa law does not give the President the authority to set or increase tax rates, so the company should be reimbursed for the premiums paid.

The company reveals that it is looking at the deadline of dec. 15 where the importation has been completed or “filed” as those values are locked, it can block the importation of those cases.
