Sevilla get an important win to relieve the pressure against 10-man Getafe

Getafe 0-1 Sevilla

Only three points separated 11th-placed Getafe and 13th-placed Sevilla coming into the game, but the situation at both clubs was very different. Los Nervionenses had won once in the previous two months (nine games), and were reeling from the news that manager Matias Almeyda would be suspended for the rest of their games. After their nine-game winless streak ended two games ago, Getafe were feeling like themselves again, and may have been tipped as favorites following a convincing win over Villarreal.

Neither side opened the game with the confidence of favorites though, prioritizing defense over damage to their opponents. Although the sun was rising, the game was crowded and showing signs of fever, not flowing. It wasn’t until the 20th minute that a humble Luis Vazquez broke the duck in terms of shots, and Sevilla didn’t own the first until stoppage time, a header limping wide from a set-piece. Getafe were the first team to blink though, with captain Dakonam Djene replacing Gabriel Suazo only to be shown a straight red card after 26 minutes.

Even with the numerical advantage, Sevilla took less risk and got the same reward in return. Akori Adams was leading the way, and mentally, Isaac Romero was supporting him, but between the front players and the players on the sides, all four seemed to play against Getafe.

Sensing their opportunity, Chidera Ejuke and Adnan Januzaj were subbed off at half-time for Baptiste Mendy and Gabriel Suazo, in an attempt to take the game to Getafe. Los Azulones were in a state of siege to start the second half, and while Sevilla were now playing in their own half, every insult and every concession was enjoyed as a small victory by the home fans.

Sevilla were doing little for themselves in Getafe’s defense until a rare move to clear in the 65th minute. Coming from the right, the ball was played to the feet of Akor Adams in the box. Catching up to Abdel Abqar, his backhand touch was perfectly set up by Djibril Sow in the center of the box – the Swiss midfielder dribbled onto the ball and slotted it into the bottom right corner for the lead.

Ejuke had a good chance to put Adams in the opening goal with 10 minutes remaining, but he dropped the move too much, before Alexis Sanchez could also make good use of his new position. When Kike Salas curled a free header into the box, Getafe seemed to wake up, and despite their ten men, managed to raise the temperature against Sevilla. Nemanja Gudelj twice stretched out a header from Luis Milla’s fine delivery, before Martin Satriano forced a first-time save from Odysseas Vlachodimos, pushing it into his left post.

That momentary burst of pressure was as close as Getafe got, even if Sevilla’s dwindling standards and faltering form of football suggest otherwise. They were the team’s nerves with just one win in 2026, and a defense ranked in the bottom three. Getafe found themselves too stretched, too short and too tired to put Sevilla’s backline under pressure that could cause them to crack.

Los Nervionenses are unlikely to use this game as a blueprint from which to build in future games, but the three points are incredibly deserved. The rising pressure valve ahead of the Seville derby, jumps them above Getafe to 11th, and provides a five-point cushion in the relegation zone. Jose Bordalas probably won’t blame his side too much for their efforts in the conditions, perhaps Djene’s experience should have protected him from the red card he received in the first half. His main irritation will be the knowledge that his Getafe was not worse than Sevilla, and on balance, much better.
