Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Raunchy Thriller Will Awaken Something Inside You

By Chris Snellgrove | Published
You don’t have to click on all these black “what are you doing, my child?” videos online so you know there’s a weird and disturbing cultural fascination with this topic. It sounds like a modern thing, but it’s not: in fact, this was the center of a race film of the ’90s, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as someone who wanted to do the unthinkable.
That movie Malicious Intentions (1999), and if you’re ready to watch a very bad, extreme movie starring Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you can now stream this extraordinary movie on Prime Video.
What are you doing?

Insanely horrible plot Malicious Intentions that a young man wants to seduce the most beautiful girl in order to win the most important prize of all: his adopted sister. Pulling off that lure will require him to become a master of manipulation who isn’t afraid to destroy a few people’s lives to get what he wants. Once he gets the feelings of prim and the right girl he’s trying to fool, it’s clear that his life will never be the same.
The cast of Malicious Intentions is full of surprises, including Ryan Phillippe (well known The crash). He’s a rich young man who gets sick of women who sleep easily and sets himself a challenge: a daughter (played by Reese Witherspoon, who is best known for Legally Blonde) of the head teacher, a girl who does not believe in intimacy before love.
He is bet with his step-sister (played by Buffy the Vampire Slayer icon Sarah Michelle Gellar), and if she wins, she will sleep with him. Along the way, he finds time to spoil an unsuspecting girl played by Selma Blair (well known Hellboy).
Wild Box Office Hit

Compared to its small budget of $10.5 million, Malicious Intentions was a smash hit (presumably teenagers trying to smash), grossing $75.9 million at the box office. This led to two sequels, though both were straight-up DVD disappointments. Interestingly, there was also a 2016 TV series planned that never made it past the pilot stage and 2024. Malicious Intentions A TV show that didn’t have enough staying power to last more than one season.
When Malicious Intentions it came out, professional reviewers didn’t know what to make of it. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 54 percent rating, with critics complaining that the appeal of the film’s cast was not enough to offset the uneven script and uneven performances.
Audiences disagreed, and the film in particular has an 80 percent Popcornmeter rating. Regular moviegoers have praised this film for its sensational story telling and scandalous plot, and they generally agree on one important point: you shouldn’t try to watch this hot movie when your parents are around!
Literary Roots Don’t Help Harmful Intentions

Anyway Malicious Intentions has deep literary roots (it adapts the famous 1782 novel Les Liaisons is dangerous), its cultural cache did not help the movie to take any major awards, such as Oscar or Golden Globe. It also won other awards, including two MTV Movie Awards (including Best Kiss for the smooch between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair) and two Teen Choice Awards (including Choice Movie and, ironically, Choice Movie Sleazebag for Gellar). The awards help highlight how popular the movie was with young audiences, even though its negative title left critics confused.
I was in high school there Malicious Intentions it came out, and I was one of the young people who were blown away by its dangerous plot. At that time, I realized that the film was filled with many beautiful faces, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, the leading lady. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (one of my favorite programs). In this way, the film is quite meta, using its attractive stars to help sell a forbidden story in the same way that Ryan Phillippe’s character uses his good looks to deceive people who really should know better.
Malicious Intentions Seen Through a Modern Lens

When I revisited this film as an adult, I was struck by how good the plot was. That is easily overlooked among all the content you represent. Phillippe’s character, for example, feels like a precursor to Barry Keoghan Saltburn character. Each is a master at using deception to get what they secretly want.
Malicious Intentions has much to say about the intersection of desire and Puritanical American culture. The script examines how ineffective it can be to align your desires with what society considers “normal.”

You will admit that Malicious Intentions is it a fun romp full of great action, or just one movie you’d rather stick in the washing machine? Don’t be surprised if this decades-old film awakens something inside of you that you can’t put back to sleep.
