RTA completes 60% of Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street mega project

The Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street development project as part of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project is more than three-fifths complete.

The massive project includes the development of four major intersections, including bridges spanning 4.3 km and roads spanning 14 km.

It will increase the capacity of Oud Maitha Road from 10,400 vehicles per hour in both directions to 15,600 vehicles per hour, almost a 50 percent increase, while reducing travel time from 20 minutes to just five minutes, an improvement of 75 percent.

When completed in 2030, the project will serve more than 420,000 residents and improve the connection between Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Road via Al Wasl Club Street, while providing a dedicated exit on Oud Maitha Road and Al Wasl Club Street.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the project’s contractor has completed 70 percent of the bridges that carry traffic from Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road northward towards Business Bay Crossing, with ongoing works in preparation for its opening in the first half of this year.

About 60 percent of the construction work on the tunnel serving vehicles from Dubai–Al Ain Road towards Al Wasl Club Street has also been completed. Work continues on the expansion of the remaining roads and associated buildings and bridges, which are scheduled to open in the third quarter of this year.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said: “The development project of Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street is carried out in accordance with the directives of the leadership to complete the development of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor to meet the growth of cities and population growth.

“This project is among the development of road infrastructure, and supports a number of important services, settlements, and developments, especially Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Maitha, Umm Hurair, Latifa Hospital, and Al Wasl Club. The population of the areas served by the project is expected to exceed 420,000 residents by 2030.”

Four intersections

Starting with Oud Maitha Road–Sheikh Rashid Road, the project includes the development of four major intersections. Works include the addition of a left-turn ramp for vehicles traveling from Oud Maitha Road onto Sheikh Rashid Road towards Al Garhoud Bridge, increasing capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour.

The scope also includes the development of a service road on Sheikh Rashid Road between the existing bridge and the Al Zahrawi Street exit, to address the existing traffic congestion and improve road safety for all users. In addition, the number of right-turn lanes for traffic from Sheikh Rashid Road to Oud Maitha Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road will be increased from two to three.

The intersection between Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street and Al Wasl Club Street will also be upgraded with the construction of two bridges connecting Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Road via Al Wasl Club Road.

The first bridge has two lanes, with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour, providing traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Wasl Club Street. The second bridge will have three lanes, with a capacity of 3,600 vehicles per hour, providing traffic from Al Khail Road to Al Asayel Road.

In addition, the project includes the construction of a two-lane bridge with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour to accommodate left-hand traffic from Al Asayel Street to Oud Maitha Road.

The third intersection to be upgraded will be between Al Wasl Club Street and Al Khail Road with the construction of a two-lane bridge that will carry traffic from Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road towards Business Bay Crossing. The scope also includes the development of Al Wasl Club Street, including increasing the capacity of the exit towards Al Khail Road to two lanes.

The intersection of Zabeel Palace Street with Al Khail and Oud Maitha Roads will get an additional left turn lane on the ramp diverting traffic from Al Khail Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road. This will increase capacity from 900 vehicles per hour to 1,800.
