As Taiwan observes its anniversary on October 10, Social media posts are shared The breadth of what they say shows how China and Taiwan celebrate the revolution that overthrew the Chinese monarchy more than a century ago. Taipei’s annual celebrations on October 10 mark the 114th anniversary of the overthrow of China’s Qing Dynasty – the so-called Xinhai Revolution – and the establishment of the Republic of China, which modern-day Taiwan still uses as its official name (archived here).

China – in which Simplified Chinese is mostly used as its written text – Considering the commitment, Democratic Taiwan as part of its territory, and Beijing does not rule out the use of force to take it (link saved).

Comments indicate others users do not use it they are disappointed by the way Taiwan is reminiscent of the Xinhai Revolution.

“Absolute disgrace. China shows respect and strength. Another shows confusion and destruction of cultural values,” another left a comment in English.

Another comment in Simplified Chinese Read: “Sun Yat-Sen-Sen coughs up blood from the image.”

The video was shared alongside similar claims on Tiktok and Weibo.

But the clips don’t match.

2019 Beijing Voression

Baidu Reverse Image Search for key frames of “China Mainland” led to screenshots of the 2019 military war in Beijing (archived link).

The logo in the upper left corner has the watermark of China’s national CHCTV (link saved). However, the full veression video is not available on its official website.

A keyword search led to a live video uploaded by British media Guardian News to YouTube on October 1, 2019 (Archived Link).

The caption reads:

AFP also reported that China celebrated the 70th anniversary of the rise of the Communist Party on October 1, 2019, with a parade of tanks, missiles and troops (link saved).

Taipei Drag queens

For the second clip, a reverse image search led to a Facebook video posted by the Taiwanese SAIWASSET TTV News Channel quoted in the President’s office, Posted by May 15, 2024 (included here and here).

The caption reads in traditional Chinese: “President Tsai Ing-Wen today (15th) found the spirit of the nymphia, won Tsai with his demonstrations, protected the tears of his eight years. He expressed gratitude for Tsai’s eight years of dedication, calling her ‘mother’ Taiwan’.”

Tsai Ing-Wen is the predecessor of the current President Lai Ching-Te (archived link).

During Tsai’s two terms in power, her Democratic Progressive party was a strong figure for social issues, especially for LGBTQ rights, making the island the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019 (link saved).

Remembering the revolution

When it comes to commemorating the Xinhai Revolution, Taiwan usually marks it alongside its national festivals (link saved).

In 2025, the self-governing island had a military and student parade at the Presidential Palace on October 10 (archived here and here).
