November’s Mega Millions jackpot of $983M claimed by an unknown winner in Georgia

A Georgia resident has been identified as the winner of the $983 million Mega Millions jackpot – the eighth largest in the game’s history and the largest lottery prize ever won in the state, officials said Tuesday.
The owner of the ticket, whose name has been withheld, went ahead on Jan. 2 to claim the prize following the Nov. 14 drawing, the lottery said.
The winner chose the cash option of $453.6 million before tax.
The lottery said the Georgia resident has family members who have benefited from the HOPE Scholarship sponsored by the Georgia Lottery.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Georgia’s record-breaking jackpot and their life-changing start to the new year,” said Georgia Lottery Corp. President. and CEO Gretchen Corbin in a statement. “This historic jackpot was also important to the Georgia students, families and communities who benefit from HOPE and Pre-K. Congratulations to the winner and we appreciate the support of our players and retail partners during this exciting jackpot run.”
The ticket holder is a regular lottery player who enjoys supporting HOPE and Pre-K in the state, the lottery said. They saw a growing jackpot on a billboard, prompting them to buy a ticket.
After learning that there is a winner, a person checks the Georgia Lottery website for the winning numbers and confirms the result.
The lottery said the winner hopes the prize will “generally” do more than give back to “good causes.”

The winning Quick Pick ticket was sold at a Newnan, Georgia, Publix supermarket. Georgia Lottery sellers who sell a winning Mega Millions jackpot ticket receive a $50,000 seller incentive bonus payment, according to the lottery.
The last time someone took home such a big prize was in December 2024, when a player from California won a jackpot of 1.269 billion.
“It is the largest prize ever won in the month of November, and the eighth largest jackpot in the history of the game,” the lottery said following the November drawing, adding that, “in the 40 drawings since the jackpot was finally won for $348 million in Virginia on June 27 – the most drawings in a single jackpot in history – almost all of the 3 million tickets won in the history of the prize. levels.”

The jackpot has been swelling since late June when one ticket sold in Georgia matched six numbers in the November 14 drawing.
Mega Millions changed its format last April, raising ticket prices from $2 to $5 per play.

The price change is expected to accelerate jackpot growth and increase the initial jackpot from $20 million to $50 million.
The record jackpot is Florida’s $1.602 billion prize as of August 2023.
