Northeast airports are seeing significant flight delays, winter storm cancellations

A winter storm on the East Coast has left post-Christmas travelers in dire straits as airports see major cancellations and delays.

The website FlightAware indicated that as of 7:50 a.m. ET Saturday, 892 flights in, to, or out of the US had been delayed and 637 canceled.

The website’s “Misery Map” shows New York-area airports, such as John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, that are experiencing severe travel chaos.

New Jersey and parts of New York are under emergency declarations as more than 50 million Americans are expected to be affected by the winter storm moving northeast, reports Fox Weather. Officials in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania are urging travelers and residents to be cautious during the storm, according to Fox Weather. Additionally, multiple winter weather warnings have been issued for areas from New York City to Philadelphia.

As of 7:52 am ET, JFK Airport, which was at the top of FlightAware’s Misery Map, saw 30 delays and 77 cancellations as of 5:00 am ET. The Federal Aviation Administration said flights arriving at the airport were delayed, on average, by two hours and 37 minutes.

Saturday’s delays and cancellations were preceded by similar travel chaos on Friday as the northeast braced for the storm. As of Friday, a total of 8,816 flights within, into or out of the US were delayed and 1,710 were canceled, according to FlightAware.

“I came to New York to have a ‘Home Alone’ Christmas by myself,” Daniel Sermone, who was stranded at JFK International Airport, told the New York Post on Friday. “I wanted to hang out. I went shopping, I went to Times Square, I hung out there for a while with the big crowd. My next available flight is 6 a.m. on the 28th. So I’ve been hanging out at JFK for about eight hours and I still have like 30 left.”

The west coast was not spared the travel chaos of the winter weather as it experienced a nasty rain storm, although it didn’t seem to cause the same amount of disruption. FlightAware indicated that Los Angeles International Airport saw 64 flight delays and 15 cancellations at 4:10 am PST. Additionally, FlightAware indicated that as of 4:10 am PST Harry Reid International Airport has seen 16 delays and nine cancellations.
