Michigan State University has reversed course on its decision to make every public bathroom in its honor DOMRORMED, following complaints from students and parents who said the arrangements made them uncomfortable.

Authorities put up new signs at Campbell Hall last week to label some private rooms by gender, a change that comes after legal complaints and the results of a multimillion-dollar renovation that show all 20 public bathrooms are unisex facilities.

Parents were not told if the bathrooms would no longer be segregated by gender – prompting at least one student to seek other facilities, according to the parent’s letter.

The buildings were the first public bathrooms of their kind in any of the institution’s 27 Dormrms. Msu said they moved to Unisex Community Bathyrooms in Campbell Hall to adapt to future changes for people in need.

“Following a review of research data, the decision was made to provide options for students,” MMU spokeswoman Kat Cooper said in a statement to Brichigan.

The honors Dorm spans four floors and includes 20 shared bathrooms, plus five shared toilets. Cooper said he is not sure how many public bathrooms will be unisex and how many will be assigned as male or female.

In an email to Campbell Hall residents, school officials said the restrooms “will be designed as much as possible for the medical community” on the floor, where there are two public bathrooms, where there are eight public restrooms, and one shared restroom.

“We wanted to ensure that no fake travel was required as part of these changes,” the email read. “The renewal is intended to provide more choice and help residents feel more comfortable on their daily routes.”

Some members of MSU’s board of trustees said this week that the university made the right call in responding to student and parent feedback.

“I’m glad the University is listening to the concerns of its students,” said Trustee Mike Balow.

“It is important that our students feel free and have options. This is the right move by the University,” said Tennis Dennis Denno.
