Listeria outbreaks grow with more deaths, reported illnesses

Seven other people have been sickened and two more have died in an ongoing outbreak of listeria linked to pasta food, according to health officials.

As of Oct. 30, 27 people from 18 countries were infected with listeriosis, 25 years old went to the hospital. Six people died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which works alongside the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection (FSIS).

The reported deaths occurred in Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Oregon, Texas and Utah. One pregnancy-related illness resulted in a miscarriage.

However, the number of people sickened in this outbreak “may be higher than the actual number” because some people recovered without medical care and were not tested for listeria.

Federal authorities, with the help of State and local partners, have been investigating several outbreaks of listernogenes diseases linked to children prepared in March where the bacteria were found in the FreshRealm Alfredo Alfredo Alfredo field.

In September, the CDC reported that FreshRealm found a marinara beef marinara dish that tested positive for the same strain of listeria monocytogene responsible for the current outbreak. While those meals were not distributed to consumers, the company also tested the ingredients used in the product. The pasta tested positive for listeria, the CDC said.

Sequencing of the entire strain confirmed that the bacteria found in the pasta matched the type of outbreak. Companies that use certain affected pastas are now recalling prepared foods and foods made with those products, according to the CDC.
