Jeep recalls plug-in hybrid SUVs over fire hazard, warns owners

Jeep is recalling more than 320,000 plug-in SUVs in the US after discovering a risk of fire related to 19 incidents, prompting owners to stop driving and park away from buildings until repairs are made.

The recall affects 2020-2025 jeep wrangler 4xe and 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE that can even catch fire even with the transmission turned off.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the company advises owners of these vehicles to park in buildings or other vehicles until a solution is found,” said Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, in a statement.

The automaker said the risk is lower when the battery is charged.

Jeep launched an internal investigation after reviewing customer data and finding 19 fires involving plug-in hybrid models.

Stellantis provided the FOX business with an official statement in an email, noting that repairs are expected soon, and owners will be notified when they can schedule repairs.

The recall includes about 20,700 vehicles in Canada, 2,600 in Mexico, and about 32,000 in other markets outside of North America.

The latest recall comes nearly two months after Stellantis recalled 91,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles in the US due to a software malfunction that could lead to a loss of steering power.

Some Jeep Grand Cherokee puroke-in Hybrid Electric Clug-in 2022 to 2026 vehicles, may have an overload of the battery control pack microprocessor, causing it to reset. When this happens, the hybrid control processor can determine negative signals in the Battery Pack Control module – Possible loss of drive power, National Highway and Transportation Administration (NHTSA).

Of the 91,787 potentially affected vehicles, only 1%, or about 918 of them, are affected, according to the NHTSA website.

Similar vehicles that are not part of this recall either do not have a hybrid control processor or were manufactured after the affected period, according to NHTSA.

In a similar announcement earlier this year, NHTSA said Stellantis is recalling more than 63,000 Jeep Cherokees, model years 2017 through 2019, due to problems with passing vehicles.

In November, Stellallantis announced it was laying off more than 1,000 workers at its Jeep plant in Ohio as the automaker significantly reduced its manufacturing levels.
