Israel says Hamas has returned Hosy Meny Godard’s remains

Israel said on Thursday that the army has surrendered the body of one of the last four hostages taken during the Oct 7, 2023, attack that launched the war in Gaza.

Israel identified the body as that of the Maydard men, who were kidnapped from Kibbutz Beeri in southern Israel. His wife, Alet, was killed during the attack.

The armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said Horard’s body was found in Southern Gaza.

Since the end of the fire between Israel and Hamas that started on Oct. 10, 25 intestinal remains were returned to Israel. There are still three more in Gaza that need to be found and given.

Health authorities in Gaza said identifying the bodies carried out by Israel was complicated by the lack of DNA testing kits.

With the departure of just three hostages, the sides are close to wrapping up the first phase of the ceasefire.

The fragile agreement aims to end the fighting caused by Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel that have killed around 1,200 people and seen 251 hostages.

Israel responded by clearing an offensive that killed more than 69,100 Palestinians in Gaza, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
