It may take three months to feel better
A 2023 study by researchers at the University of Washington examined the recovery time of people who received a single stroke. The study observed the participants over a period of two years and found that people who were going to have a fracture experienced a temporary increase in depressive symptoms, which returned to the levels before three months.

We know what the research tells us, but what do clinicians think based on their experience talking to patients?
Naomi Magnus, a psychotherapist at North London Therapy, says there is no fixed time frame for getting over a breakup. “Your emotional recovery will depend on the shape and depth of the relationship, how well you deal with stressful situations, and the support network around you,” says Ceashable.
Magnus adds that many people report gradual improvement over weeks or months, but that processing grief can take six months or more. He says: “It is normal to feel waves of sadness, anger or longing. “To heal, you need to process these feelings, take good care of yourself, share with people who love you and show it in relationships.”

“I think if I were to rely on my own experience to put a number on it, I would say that there is up to a year of recovery time from separation,” he added. “If it was to pull more forward than that, or if it had to have an impact on being able to move forward in life, then it would be a really healing thing to work with a professional therapist.”
