Getafe fire Real Betis with a jovial display of Bordalas-ball

Getafe 2-0 Real Betis

The situation between Getafe and Real Betis could not have been more different had the match arrived at the Coliseum. Los Azulones were fresh off the back of their second win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, and were warned by Jose Bordalas about complacency. Betis, on the other hand, have endured a week of finger-pointing, after their two-goal lead was allowed to slip in the Seville derby, which is as much a sin as defeat.

Tensions turned acrimonious when problems on the pitch halted the game after just seven minutes, several Real Betis fans were removed from security in one area of the stadium, and police charged Getafe fans who were to face another part of the traveling support. After a six-minute delay, action was finally taken, fortunately without serious injury, at least from a distance.

When the game resumed, Real Betis found pockets of space to shoot from distance, but it was Getafe who looked more dangerous on rare occasions going forward. Just before the half-hour mark, a long throw from the left and a powerful header from Luis Vasquez brought a flying save from Alvaro Valles. A loose ball hit the top of the back post, but Kiko Femenia showed excellent technique to fire the ball under the post, giving Getafe the lead.

Los Verdiblancos piled on the pressure after that, their best effort coming from a set piece. After Cucho Hernandez teed up Adel Abqar, he curled a free-kick into the top corner – only David Soria had a chance to deny him. As the half drew to a close, a seemingly innocuous ball in the back found Martin Satriano more enlightened than defensive. Waiting for the onrushing Alvaro Valles, his lob landed in the far corner for the second great goal of the week. A shell-shocked Betis ended the half with Getafe chasing them, Zaid Romero making three challenges with his screamer effort.

The Coliseum is alive with the sound of tough challenges – and head tennis

With Getafe focused on making sure they held on to what they had before chasing a third, Betis were invited to break it down. Hernandez found Junior Firpo moving down the left flank and leaped to meet his return cross, but Soria was equal to it. Manuel Pellegrini sent on Antony, Rodrigo Riquelme and Pablo Fornals, and moments later, the Brazilian blocked an effort from the far left.

That seemed to wake Getafe up, and after a series of head tennis did the same to the crowd, the home side began to put themselves into Betis again. A neat exchange involving Satriano and Luis Milla, Getafe’s best player, saw Los Azulones pull a goal back, when it was Betis with the right to apply the pressure.

The clearest opening they got was Marc Barta’s header from a recycled corner kick, but his flick was too hard to find the far corner. Fornals was the one charged with orchestrating the Betis attack, but he often saw his options cut short by the tetris of blue shirts in front of him. The end of the tension came two minutes before the end when Cedric Bakambu was looking at the whole world as if he was going to convert the ball that was bent by Antony next to him. The fearsome Soria fell onto the ball just in time to trap it underneath him.

After the start of the game in the stadiums, it was a funny Coliseum that laughed when its players missed a goal, or roared when Betis stopped Betis in their tracks. The fans were fed up knowing that their Getafe are 10 points behind the drop with 11 games left. Bordalas will punish anyone who reveals they are in a possible location in Europe.

On the other side of the scale, this will do little to ease the frustrated fans back in Seville. Betis faced all the odds against Getafe, and although Soria had a highlight reel that included a string of excellent saves the feeling was sinking. What little hope Betis had of challenging for fourth place was abandoned by Getafe, as they dropped 11 points behind Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.
