Deputy Killed in Line of Duty Before High Speed Pursuit and Crash on SoCal Freeway
A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputy died Monday after being shot while responding to a domestic violence incident in Rancho Cucamonga.
Deputy Andrew Nunez was pronounced dead at a local hospital after he was shot in the head by a man who later led authorities on a high-speed chase down the 210 freeway that ended in a violent crash.
Authorities say Nunez responded at approximately 12:40 PM to the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga for a report of an armed man threatening a woman.
When deputies arrived, the suspect allegedly opened fire immediately, hitting Nonnez once. Responding deputies managed first aid until the Aporoyas arrived to transport Nanez by helicopter to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities say Nunez was a six-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department. He was married with a 2-year-old daughter and was expecting a second child with his wife.
Andrew Pernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Sheriff Nanez was shot and killed in the line of duty on Oct. 27, 2025.
Sheriff Shannon Dicus spoke about Nunez’s killing and explained that the grief is felt among the Department’s employees and law enforcement agencies across the county.
“We are filled with sorrow,” Dicus Siad. “Unfortunately in this department, it happens a lot.”
Dicus said he believed this was the 81st shooting involving his deputies since the Sheriff in 2022.
“There’s a fair share of violence out there,” Dicus said. “We are trying to be smart to prevent this violence.”
After Nunez was fatally injured, the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle, leading to a high-speed chase on the 210 freeway.
Authorities pursued the man on a motorcycle as he traveled westbound at speeds exceeding 120 mph. He eventually exited the freeway and then re-entered, traveling east in the direction he was traveling.
At one point, he narrowly escaped an accident with a high-ranking California Rotay Patrol Partyl involved in the chase.
The pursuit eventually came to an end near Claremont after a black sedan plowed into the motorcycle’s path, knocking the suspect off the bike and into the air at speeds of up to 70 mph. Sky5 was passing by at the time of the accident and appeared to show that the motorcyclist turned around and looked back at the pedestrians before colliding with the car.
The accused was filled on the handle of his bicycle and crashed on his back where he was injured until he rushed until they responded to him. He was then loaded into an emergency helicopter and flown to a nearby hospital where he is currently in critical condition.
During a press conference late Monday afternoon, Dicus said the driver of the car that brought the motorcycle down was actually an off-duty deputy.
The 210 freeway remained closed for several hours with vehicles unable to leave the road while investigators combed the area. As of 5:45 in the evening, the road was completely closed.

Dicus said his department will work tirelessly to ensure that the accused of killing Nanez is caught for his crimes.
“We will do our best, the most important thing at this time is to make sure that we bring the suspect to justice and take good care of that family,” said Diko.
Deputy Nuneut’s law enforcement meeting began around 6 p.m., as his body was moved from hospital to hospital to a local funeral home.
The suspect accused of shooting and killing him has not been identified by the authorities. San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson said his office will likely file murder charges against the peace officer.
Anderson said investigators are still uncovering details about the case, which he called “significant.”
