Black and Decker Dustbuster Flex for $89: This is another cool hand space that’s great for cars, or indoor spaces like patios. It has a 4-foot hose, longer than most compact vacuums, and has a small, easy-to-use charging accessory. And thank goodness for the Charging Mount, because the battery only lasts 15 minutes.

Dyson car + Boat Handheld Vacuum for $280: Dyson’s latest Handheld Vacuum is designed specifically with cars (and boats!) in mind, so if you have a car to clean, this is for you. It has good battery life compared to other portables.

Dyson Gen5 cordless vacuum cleaner for $935: This is Dyson’s current top of the line vacuum, and it’s great, especially for homes with a lot of pet hair. But it is expensive and rarely on sale, which makes it difficult to improve when you still get a good experience with the Dyson V15 acquisition. But this vacuum has a hepa filter, while the v15 does.

Roborock QRREVO S for $800 (used): This is our top build of a robot vacuum pub, but Tech recently updated the QREVO line with new models that don’t ship to the United States, and our favorite model is available Secondhand.

TineCo Pure One One Station 5 for $459: If you want a cordless vacuum but don’t want to deal with finding it all the time, this tineco vacuum comes with a self-discharge decking station. The last one you have to take out of the station, but it’s a nice bonus feature and keep the vacuum from falling around your home because it’s safely stored in the docking station.

Which style vacuum is right for you?

Here’s what makes each style of vacuum great to help you decide which one to buy.

  • Cordless methods or stick vacuums: These spaces look like the last name indicates, a long, stick-like arm that connects the vacuum head to the canister and the controls. You’ll need to hold this in a way that you wouldn’t with an upright vacuum, but this one is powerful and super mobile. They make a great vacuum, and they are great if you have many rooms to burn because it is easy to carry these high ladders and poles.
  • Vacuum Robot: Robot Vacuums are ready to clean for you, and are controlled by an app. There are several models that double as a mop, too. You will have to spend time moving the furniture for the best cleaning possible, and usually you still want a standard vacuum of some kind in your home. But these are great for regular cleaning of children and pets.
  • Mobile spaces: Portable vacuums are ideal for targeted cleaning, or cleaning specific areas such as stairs and cars. Many stick vacuums can be converted into hand-held vacuums, but true authorities are much lighter and have a more compact design (but also beat battery power and dustbin power).

What about vertical spaces?

The upright vacuum is the classic, original-style vacuum cleaner that stays upright on its own and is much larger than the mounts, and requires an outlet connection to operate. At the moment we don’t have a specific vacuum that we recommend, because cordless parts have become the main focus of many consumers (and as vacuumenders ourselves, we often reach for cordless vacuums and robots anyway). We are considering specific aspects of testing in the future, however, and feel free to comment on this guide on models to consider.

Do you need a stick vacuum and a handheld vacuum?

Do you need a handheld vacuum if you already have a cordless vacuum? Probably not, because many stick icons can turn into a handheld vacuum anyway. Vacuums or cordless varesses often allow you to remove the adhesive part from between the vacuum head and the canister base and instead connect those two pieces directly, making it more of a vacuum. It will be more difficult than a vacuum designed to be carried by hand on a regular basis, and it can be annoying if you have a specific use case that you want, but you don’t need both unless there is a specific reason. The handle is a great add-on if you already have an upright vacuum that you like that doesn’t need replacing.

How often should you replace an electrician?

Vacuums last about five years, depending on frequency of use and quality of construction. Some really cheap cheap ribs can only last a year or two, so it’s worth investing in a better one than getting a cheap dupe. If you want to know what signs may indicate that your vacuum needs replacing, check out our guide to how long it can last.
