Barcelona equalize with the last kick of the game at Newcastle United

Newcastle United 1-1 Barcelona

Hansi Flick was heard telling his players before the game that they must focus on the first stages of their journey to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle United, which is full of momentum. The German manager was reassured by his advice, but it was the rest of the game that caused them problems.

After just three minutes, Pau Cubarsi was forced to clear the line after Joan Garcia spilled the ball. That set the tone for a nervy opening 20 minutes, as Newcastle dropped deep behind defenders Ronald Araujo and Joao Cancelo time and time again. It was Anthony Elanga on the right who gave Barcelona a lot of trouble, hitting several dangerous balls into the six-yard box without finding players. The one time Will Osula connected, he was stretching and unable to keep a free header down.

It was Elanga himself after 20 minutes who forced Garcia into a stunning save, beating the offside trap, and fired his shot into the far corner, only to be denied by a stunning finger save. Barcelona settled down for some long periods after that, as they looked to slow down the pace and limit Newcastle’s attacking chances. On the other hand, Barcelona’s attack passed only through Lamine Yamal.

The youngster released Raphinha in a good position on the left side of the box on two occasions, but he did not take advantage of it. The one he did put back to Fermin Lopez in a good shooting position was aimed at Aaron Ramsdale. Lamine Yamal hit Lewis Hall in the box at one point, at which point Ramsdale put in a very tough move.

The second half began in the same way as the first ended, Barcelona enjoying the ball more, but expressing a clear sense of vulnerability. Eddie Howe would have been more comfortable watching Elanga and Osula run at the back, than Flick whose side could not get forward. Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were beaten on every ball, and their difficulty spending time on the ball shocked Barcelona.

On the rare occasions they did, Barcelona were able to cause trouble. Raphinha was released down the left with the Newcastle defense scraping, picking out Lewandowski in the middle. Suddenly, the veteran forward stabbed the ball from a distance. Moments later, a ball from deep found Jacob Murphy, whose volley from the penalty area crashed over the bar, a wonderful opportunity.

The momentum was in Barcelona’s favor, and after the 70th minute, Pedri was taken off for his own benefit. After a while, the danger was shown by Marc Bernal, who went down with the problem that his place was taken by Marc Casado. Barnes would break the deadlock on 15 minutes, and Joelinton celebrated the opener, only for an offside flag to silence the crowd. However the feeling was that it was damn near breaking the whole game, and with four minutes to go, it did.

A one-two down the right from Murphy found an unmarked Harvey Barnes in the six-yard box once, and he piled on the end for the opening goal of the tie. Raphinha was defending at the far post, and Ronald Araujo had to come off due to an injury to Xavi Espart, Barcelona were reduced to bare bones.

In stoppage time, it didn’t seem like Barcelona were attacking with much urgency, accepting what was lacking. However, as the clock turned to 94:00, which is the last four minutes of stoppage time, Raphinha found Dani Olmo on the edge of the box. He thought he had taken Malick Thiaw out of the equation with a fall on his shoulder, but he was brought down in the box. To the disbelief of the whole stadium, Lamine Yamal got up and rolled the penalty into the left corner.

His celebration was a wave of arms – which spoke to the confusing nature of the closing stages. Barcelona were stretched to the limit, only to fold after several cuts. Despite stirring efforts from Garcia, Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin, the two injuries were tangible evidence of their inability to cope with Newcastle’s unrelenting nature, their futile attempts to impose their style on the game.

And yet a moment of quality in the dying seconds made the previous 94 minutes worthless. Barcelona return to the Camp Nou with a draw, but also with a significant headache accompanied by aches and pains in the legs. Flick had eight days to come up with answers.
