UEFA is pointing the finger at Argentina’s FA as La Finalissima has been cancelled

UEFA has confirmed the unfortunate news that the 2026 La Finalissima, which was due to be played between Spain and Argentina, has been canceled with immediate effect.

The match, which was supposed to take place at the end of this month, was scheduled for Doha, but due to the tension in the Middle East, it was postponed. Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium was proposed as a new venue, however Argentinian The Football Association rejects this option, as UEFA has now confirmed in its statement announcing the cancellation of La Finalissima.

“After many discussions between UEFA and the organizing authorities in Qatar, today it was announced that due to the political situation in the region, the Finalissima between the winners of UEFA EURO 2024 Spain and the champions of CONMEBOL Copa América 2024, Argentina cannot be played as expected in Qatar on 27 March.

“With a strong determination to save an important game, despite the understandable difficulty of changing such an important game in a very short time, UEFA explored other possible options but each ended up being unacceptable to the Argentina Football Association.

“The first option was for the match to be played at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid on the first day where the fans split 50:50. This would have given a world-class atmosphere, suitable for such an event, but Argentina refused.

“The second was to stage the Finalissima over two legs – one at the Santiago Bernabeu on 27 March and the other in Buenos Aires during the international window before UEFA EURO and Copa America 2028, which also gave the fans a 50:50 split in the game in Madrid. This option was also rejected.

“Finally, UEFA sought a commitment from Argentina that, if a neutral venue could be found in Europe, the game could go ahead on March 27, as planned and announced on December 18, 2025, or on another date of March 30. This proposal was also rejected.

“Argentina made a counter-proposal to play the game after the World Cup but, since Spain did not have dates available, that option had to be withdrawn. Finally, and contrary to the agreed plan that the game would be on the 27th of March, Argentina announced that they would only play on the 31st of March, a date that proved to be ineffective.

“As a result, and due to UEFA’s regret, this Finalissima program has been cancelled.”

The Spanish Football Federation responded with the cancellation

In their statement, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has since acknowledged the news that La Finalissima has been cancelled.

“From the first moment, the Federation has expressed its interest in the preservation of this sport, considering that it gives prestige and international prestige at an important time in the World Cup year. And, more than that, you have worked hard for it.

“Spain was determined to play as it has always been shown, we have not set the conditions. From the first minute we have been fighting with UEFA to reach an agreement and everything is possible:

  • To host the game in our country, given that there is a large organizational capacity that can allow it to be successfully held in a short period of time.
  • Hold the game in a neutral position.
  • Celebrate the match in a different format.

“Spain has given, in collaboration with UEFA, all the possibilities, except that, and because of this situation, the Finalissima has been cancelled.

“At the same time and in a way that caters to the needs of the Spanish national team, the Federation has started steps to confirm the matches that will be played in the next window in Spain.

“The Federation regrets the cancellation of this match and, given the circumstances, would like to thank UEFA for the effort made throughout to preserve the match.”
