Pedri’s light in the dark night

Barcelona were knocked out of their comfort zone by Newcastle United, but grabbed a draw at the death.
Joan Garcia – 7
After a tense first minute, Garcia came up with a great save from Elanga that looked set to be ruled out after a VAR review. He went out looking for crosses very well, and blocked three or four balls in the box.
Ronald Araujo – 6.5
He added almost nothing going forward, but stuck to his job well. Araujo was rarely beaten by Harvey Barnes, and the goal itself was unlucky to be offside. Not a sparkling display from Araujo, but in his second start of 2026, he looked up to the challenge.
Pau Cubarsi – 7.5
Cubarsi continued his good form, getting key blocks. Even when Will Osula ran away from the back line, Cubarsi was always on the ground, and he was reliable.
Gerard Martin – 7.5
Even though Barcelona looked overwhelmed at the back, their defense in the box was, for the most part, quite good. Martin was a big part of that, making a lot of key ideas.
Joao Cancelo – 6.5
He was abused many times in the first half by Anthony Elanga, who was struggling to live with him. However, the Portugal defender was one of the few players who showed personality on the ball, and was willing to take passes to push it forward.
Peter β 8
Described by some in the Spanish media as a ‘lighthouse’ today, it was easy to see why. Pedri covered up a lot of mistakes in Barcelona’s performance, slowing down the game where possible, and winning the ball back many times. The best of Barcelona night.
Marc Bernal – 5.5
He did his best in the middle of the field, but his work was exposed. Often he felt as if the ball was flying over his head, and he would turn from side to side, until it was too late.

Lamine Yamal – 6.5
After a good first half, Lamine Yamal disappeared a lot in the second. His defense was good, but he ended up giving the ball away too many times in his half. It is increased by the calmness of the equalizer.
Fermin Lopez – 7
Even though he wasted a few chances going forward, with a very good chance, Fermin Lopez defended very well. He was regularly positioned in midfield, and was one of the few players who managed to gain a foothold from Newcastle’s players.
Raphinha – 4
Raphinha looked insecure all night. Twice he was put in good position by Lamine Yamal in the first half, and it was too late to do anything about them. Besides, he has been giving the ball away, and his usual pressing is ineffective. A tough night for the Brazilians.
Robert Lewandowski – 3.5
The only thing he opened up was a chance to open the half, but he failed to score. That happened just before he was released, after a real struggle. Lewandowski couldn’t get the ball up high, lost almost all of his battles, and often looked out of place.
Your substitute
Dani Olmo – 7.5
Pedri came on for the last 20 minutes, and a lot passed for him, but the quality of his decisive action is very difficult in such a short time on the pitch. Not only did he shake up the game, it was a nice change to beat Malick Thiaw.
Marcus Rashford – 6
It has been a struggle for Rashford this time. He tried to make things happen when he got the ball, but was quickly frustrated by the level of service.
Marc Casado – 6
Maybe we are angry with Casado because of the players he is against in his position. However, his time on the field failed to have an impact on the game.
Ferran Torres β N/A
He fell on one occasion where he received the ball in the tackle area.
Xavi Espart β N/A
In the few minutes he had, Espart had a few good contributions in his Barcelona debut. He blocked Joe Willock in the box, and was first to the ball in midfield to win a free-kick in stoppage time.
π¨ Xavi Espart: “It was a dream to be able to play for the first time with the first team of BarΓ§a. I will continue to work to get more opportunities.” ποΈ
