‘It’s not the time to talk about Lewandowski’s future’

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has left questions about the future of Robert Lewandowski, who have been talked about in Catalonia. The veteran is out of contract at the end of the season, and for the first time, he is not a guaranteed starter at Camp Nou.

Ahead of their clash with RCD Mallorca on Saturday, Flick was asked how concerned he was with the number of chances his side were putting away, or the number of chances they were giving up. Recent games have seen Barcelona dominate without making the most of it on the score sheet.

“I am very happy with the way we are playing football. Yes, we need to focus more in front of the goals, but the team is on the right track. When we face Mallorca, we have to be careful with Muriqi, who is having a good season.”

Flick sidesteps Lewandowski’s contract discussion

Meanwhile, one of the players that is surprising that he was not in the front and the center to take their chances is Lewandowski. This week it was reported that Barcelona intends to discuss the extension of the contract with the 37-year-old player next year, and most of the time the line was that Barcelona will want to replace him. Flick was asked if he had spoken to Lewandowski about his reduced role and his future.

“Yes we have talked about this situation, but it’s not the end of the season. It’s not the time to talk about it. I don’t know what will happen. I know he wants to play a little, get more minutes; he’s in good form. I have to say he loves playing for Barca, I don’t know what will happen at the end of the season. We don’t know what will happen with the team. We don’t know what will happen with the team.”

Just before the press conference, Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font said he would not retain the Director of Football Deco if elected in March. Flick will be his manager, but the German spoke highly of his work alongside the former midfielder.

“Right now I’m very happy working with Deco, we have the same philosophy. We know what we have to do, I really appreciate it.”

Another player that has appeared to be out in recent years is the Uruguayan defender, Ronald Araujo. He was handed his first start after the break in December against Albacete, and Flick was asked what others in his squad lacked.

“He has a high-quality body, unlike all players. He is very fast, one of the captains, one of the leaders. He must continue like this, take one step at a time. Our playing philosophy is not easy because of the way he plays, but he is growing, and we have to help him adapt to our philosophy.”

The future of Jan Virgili

Another player’s future was also revealed – this weekend Barcelona will face former La Masia product Jan Virgili, who left the club for €3.5m in the summer. He was in good form for Los Bermellones.

“All I can say is what I see is that he is doing a good job in Mallorca, I am very happy for him.”

There have been suggestions that Barcelona are not only looking at him, but are wondering if they should make a move to bring him back. They have first right of refusal on the 19-year-old player, and a 40% sell-on fee.
