RCD Mallorca beat Sevilla with a second-half brace from Muriqi

RCD Mallorca 4-1 Sevilla

After Levante and Real Oviedo picked up points again this weekend, RCD Mallorca will be desperate to get back into the relegation zone, against a Sevilla side that is always in a state of confusion. Positioned in mid-table, they started the night four points from 8th, and three from 18th.

The home side started with plenty of confidence and ambition, with the lively Jan Virgili forcing a fine save from Odysseas Vlachodimos early on. Vedat Muriqi also came close with a header, but the Kosovan striker is unstoppable this season. It was Virgili who provided the opening chance, after throwing outside Jose Angel Carmona on the left side of the box, he was caught by a Sevilla defender. Muriqi sent Vlachodimos the wrong way to convert from 12 yards.

Los Nervionenses were completely out of control, and aimed to make Mallorca sweat with every pass. On the stroke of half-time, Peque Fernandez pounced on a cross from Omar Mascarell in midfield, releasing debutant Neal Maupay down the right. From just inside the box, the French striker lashed the ball into the top corner in alarming fashion, leveling matters before Jagoba Arrasate had time to mourn the loss of the ball.

The second half started with Mallorca on the up, and Vlachodimos was forced to do something urgent to push Muriqi’s ball. Arrasate’s team had begun to win the ball in Sevilla’s half with increasing frequency, and from there the second came. Samu Costa won the ball back, then quickly looked at Muriqi. He also slipped the ball into the left wing, where Virgili dropped a double shoulder to get past two Sevilla defenders. However, Virgili didn’t have the angle, and his shot was blocked – only for Costa to take advantage of Gabriel Suazo’s blind spot at the back, and flick the ball home.

That came 10 minutes into the second half, and Sevilla responded again, with a series of shots blocked from close range, with Pablo Maffeo clearing the ball from behind, almost on his own goal line. Mtatias Almeyda’s could not find a consistent rhythm, and its danger appeared, while Mallorca’s looked the result of Arrasate’s plan. With 15 minutes to go, Johan Mojica released Costa after an offside trap and, smartly, he timed Muriqi in the penalty area. His effort was strong enough to beat the hand of Vlachodimos this time.

It was only in the closing stages that Sevilla started playing in the Mallorcan half, but it felt very futile. Rather than put it close, Mateo Joseph slipped Pablo Torre into the box on the break for the fourth time in stoppage time, pressing it under Vlachodimos. It was the first time Mallorca had scored four goals in La Liga in almost three years.

Almeyda, on his back, looked worried as he watched Mallorca level on 24 points, now just two off Rayo Vallecano in the relegation zone. Arrasate has been frustrated by his team’s inability to shut out opponents, with the last clean sheet coming from the last eight games, but with Muriqi and Virgili in their current form, Mallorca can still hope to win games. The Kosovan continues to prove unstoppable, scoring his 16th goal of the season, second only to Kylian Mbappe.
