Texas and Florida lead U-Haul’s ‘Growth Index’ for moving states in 2025.

Texas and Florida too leads the list of US states that’s where most people are moving, according to U-Haul’s analysis.

The moving company, which reviewed more than 2.5 million one-way jobs across the US and Canada in its 2025 “Growth Index,” said Texas it is the top of the migration states, followed by Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina. The states with the most commuters are California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.

“The country’s green-to-red migration, a hotly debated political topic that came to the fore after the 2020 pandemic, continues to be a phenomenon,” said U-Haul. “Seven of the top 10 states currently carry Republican governors, and nine of those states were red in the last presidential election.”

“On the other hand, nine of the ten fastest-growing states include Democratic governors, and seven of those states went green in the last presidential election,” it added.

U-Haul said it charges states “for the total gain (or loss) of customers who rent a U-Box dump truck, trailer or moving container in one state and dispose of their equipment in another state.”

“While the rates may not directly correlate with population growth or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective measure of how well states, cities and towns are attracting and retaining residents,” the company continued.

It also said that Oregon, which ranks 11th in 2025 among the net gain states, saw the largest increase in its area, improving 23 places compared to 2024. Meanwhile, Ohio experienced the biggest drop, dropping from 14th last year to 43rd this year.
