Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle55, was among seven people killed in a plane crash in North Carolina on Thursday.

Biffle’s most profitable seasons were 2005, 2012, and 2014, the only campaigns in which he raised $5 million. In 2005, when he picked his best six out of 19 flags, he won $5,574,083. Seven years later, he brought home $5,561,538, and in 2014, he added another $5,257,708.

His racing statistics in the Craftsman Truck Series, where he was the 2000 champion, are not public. There are also no Xfinity Series numbers, which he won in 2002. Biffle has 20 wins in the Xfinity Series and 17 checkered flags in the Craftsman Truck Series.

Biffle retired from racing in 2016 but returned six years later for five races, including his final Daytona 500. His best race finishes were third in 2010 and 2012. A Cessna C550 burst into flames when it crashed at Statesville Regional Airport, authorities said. The plane first took off and turned back towards the airport, trying to land. The cause of the crash was not yet known, and it was not the reason the plane attempted to return to the airport.
