John Funer, who has led the nation’s largest private employer since 2019, will become Walmart’s global CEO in February, overseeing all global divisions. He will replace Doug McMillon, who announced his retirement in January after a decade at the helm of the retailer.
Fener rose from a summer working for Walmart in Mexico to be appointed head of marketing and sales Walmart China, based in Shenzhen In 2011. In 2017, he was appointed to lead Walmart’s membership retention, before rising to the US sandm division two years later.

In a 2024 interview with Fox Business, Funer said a pillar of his leadership includes creating a network of people he can listen to for advice, especially in difficult times. Funer also learned that understanding a person’s weaknesses and knowing when to look out for others can help a good leader.

Walmart CEO to retire in January
There are situations where problems can be solved internally, but there are many times when a person has to “listen externally,” Funer said. “Many times in the morning, in the evening, I listen to what is happening outside and just try to look at the view.”
Part of this job means visiting company locations and talking to friends to understand what problems they are facing. Walmart US has 1.5 million jobs in more than 4,700 stores.
His next role will include overseeing more than that number. For example, Walmart Inc. it has a global footprint of more than 10,750 stores and clubs around the world, operates in 19 countries, and employs approximately 40% of the people worldwide.

Although the executive board believes that it takes a team to run Walmart US, which is 441.8% of its financial sales, from the Arkansas operation of Pour – From the operation of his ARMASAS RUP to learn how to play the guitar – to shape his business.
Funer credits his years of playing guitar with his ability to listen and think more. But working on his grandfather’s farm in Arkansas, he said, taught him the value of hard work and how to find solutions to problems in several ways.

“I learned with him that animals do not take Sundays, Saturdays and Wednesdays when they are closed. They always wake up,” he said. “He wakes up early in the morning, goes to the fence to make sure the cow didn’t go through it. … He sold things outside the garden, he sold watermelons and everything you can think of.”
