New Yorkers will elect a new mayor today. Here’s what you need to know

New York City voters have already made it clear that interest and engagement are high in Tuesday’s election.
More than 735,000 ballots were cast during the nine days of the original City, early morning voting – four times the number of ballots cast during the state election, the only mayoral race to allow early voting.
And the race always attracts national attention. With nearly 8.5 million people, New York is the largest city in the United States and the nation’s capital.
Polls have suggested that the city is on track to elect its first Muslim Mayor, a Democrat, who has prompted President Donald Trump to threaten to withdraw federal funding from New York.
Here’s what you need to know:
Who is running?
The top three are democrats Zoohran mamdaniRepublican Curtis Sliwa and the governor of New York Andrew Cuomowho runs as an independent.
MamdaniThe 34-year-old congressman beat Cuomo in the Democratic Primary by nearly 13 percent, prompting Cuomo to declare as an independent.
Mamdani describes himself as a democratic democrat. His campaign has focused heavily on the cost of living and how to make life in an affordable city.
His policies include raising taxes on New York City’s most vulnerable, raising federal taxes, increasing apartment rents and expanding publicly subsidized housing.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation a week after the release of a damning report on allegations of sexual misconduct, which raised the need to come down.
67 years old Leader is trying to get him back into political office after he stepped down as governor four years ago after being accused of sexual harassment, which he denies.
Despite being a Democrat before the mayoral race, he has been favoring Republicans by likening the House of Representatives to Latin American Governments.
Cuomo touted himself as his candidate for the election that would beat Mamdani and promised to hire more police officers and reduce crime.
We fight running a distant third behind the two front runners. The 71-year-old ran in the Republican Primary. He is running to become Mayor for the second time after losing the 2021 election in the country’s murderous states to Eric Adams.
He is a New York City activist who launched Guardian Angels, a non-profit organization that worked to fight crime and street violence, in 1979. Sliwa also spent thirty years hosting various talk shows.
The staunch animal rights advocate said his campaign is focused on quality of life — especially in the city’s outdoor oil fields — and public safety. He also described himself as an anti-Trump Republican.
It doesn’t make sense?
Adams, the current mayor of New York, was elected four years ago as a Democrat and plans to seek re-election as an independent. But he was polling so poorly that he dropped out of the race in September.
His name will always be on the ballot.
When does voting open and close?
Polls in all of New York’s five BOROUGHES will open at 6 am ET and close at 9 PM ET.
Results are expected to come soon. In the last mayoral election in 2021, Adams was declared the winner about 10 minutes after the polls closed. He won almost two-thirds of the vote.
Tuesday’s result could be close. Mamdani has been leading, but Cuomo has managed to tighten the race in recent days.
Zohran Mamdani is shaking up the New York Mayor’s race with a social platform that includes rent control and social mobility. The Front-Runner’s message is drawing both support and backlash from the Financial Elite, including the US President.
What did Trump say about this race?
As the race progressed, Trump threatened to arrest Mamdani, deport him and take over the city if he won.
In an interview on CBS 60 minutes On Sunday, Trump said that if Mamdani wins, “it will be difficult for me because the president will give a lot of money to New York.”
He was repeated down as the race threatened on Monday, he sent to the social media that it is possible that “it is very possible that I have an impact on money, except for very little as needed.”
And Trump, a Republican, urged New Yorkers not to vote for Sliwa, saying it would only help Mamdani.
“Whether you like Andrew Cuomo personally or not, you have no choice. You should vote for him, and hope he does a good job,” Trump wrote.
What mamdani win can aim for democratic party
Although Mamdani was finally allowed by The leader of the Democratic US House Little HAkeEM Jeffries before the start of the voting in New York, was not accepted around the world.
While some have called Mamdani a “shining light in the democratic party,” others have expressed concern that Recwali may arrest him in the ranks of scientists.
