GM to add Google Gemini AI technology to cars starting in 2025

General Motors is putting you in a leading role in the evolution of AI with a suite of advances from updating the driver’s needs to driving itself.

The automaker, which sells cars under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick Brands, plans to equip its cars with Google Gemini next year’s AI built-in custom AI.

With revolutionary AI, drivers will be able to text and send messages and directions in a contextual program, such as finding a charging station near your favorite coffee shop or automaker. Beginning in 2026, the enhancements will be released via a software update to Onstar-equipped vehicles beginning in the 2015 model year.

That’s just one step in its broader plan to build “cars that not only move you but expect you to adapt to your needs and evolve over time.”

The automaker is already drawing up plans to build its own AI that is tailored to each vehicle’s risk and personal preferences. The automaker isn’t saying whether its custom-built AI will be available. It will run on GM’s next-generation computer platform, which won’t hit the ground running until 2028.

Its AI platform, integrated with ONSTAR, will connect to the Internet of Online Intelligence to deliver vehicle-specific information such as last minute warnings and optimized route planning. It will also describe car features such as one-way driving and restaurant recommendations based on the driver’s preferences and past routes.

There will also be privacy controls that allow drivers to know what they share and how their information is used, according to GM.

The company also plans to introduce “eyes-off driving” in 2028, abuse of the Cadillac Escalade IQ for highway use. GM says the car is “designed to handle the drive where you want it to be,” marking another step in its vision for personal driving autonomy. It’s a step up from the hands-free rigs currently available on larger boats.

“Unlike systems only, GM’s only approach is built in redundancy with lidar, which provides a 3D map of the vehicle’s environmental resolution, radar and cameras integrated into the vehicle’s design,” said Gm.

Since its launch in 2017, Super Cruise has expanded to 23 vehicle models, powering more than 700 million reported miles through the program.
