Snapchat, Canva and Coinbase are among the biggest apps hit by the AWS Global outage

A major outage of Amazon Web services (AWS) disrupted access to the world’s most used applications and websites on Monday, including Snapchat, Canva, Coinbase and Amazon platforms.

The outage began early Monday in the United States and quickly spread around the world, affecting gaming, banking and entertainment activities. Acter Tracker Dowdenet reported thousands of complaints from users unable to access platforms such as duolingo, roolnite, playstation, vodafone and the tax authority’s website, HMRC.

AWS said it was experiencing “increased error rates and outages for multiple AWS services in the US-East-1 region,” with 28 of its services affected. “Engineers are quickly engaged and actively working on both of these issues and thoroughly understand the root cause,” the company said in an update.

Authenticated Coinbase users were unable to log into their accounts, citing an AWS outage. “We know many users are currently unable to access Coinbase due to the outage,” Cryptocurrency Exchange X said, adding that “all currencies are safe.”

Messages Signal app and AI StartPup DuntepTrity also reported a crash. “The ROOT cause is an AWS problem,” CEO Aravind Srinivas. Signal CEO Meredith Whittaker tweeted that the outage affected some users and was “related to a larger AWS outage.”

The walkout caused knock-on effects to travel plans and merchandising systems, with reports of malfunctioning kiosks at New York’s Laguardia Airport.

AWS, a division of Amazon that generated 108 billion in revenue last year, runs a large part of the Internet’s infrastructure around the world, powering thousands of websites and business systems. A disruption in its cloud network can cause outages across multiple industries.

AWS recently confirmed that the outage was caused by a “functional issue” affecting “multiple services” and said it was “active” in an update at 2:01 AM Pacific Time. Shortly after, the company said it was seeing “significant signs of recovery” and that “more applications should now be successful,” although developers are still clearing the backlog of applications in the queue.

DownDesec reported that the outage hit major platforms, including Amazon, Disney +, the Lyft app, Reddit, Ring, United Airlines, Venmo and Verizon.

Canva said it is “experiencing significantly increased error rates affecting performance on Canva,” adding that “there is a serious problem with our underlying cloud provider.”

The incident was the latest reminder of how complex the Global Digital Ecosystem has become. A similar crash in July 2024, caused by a faulty software update, domesticated aircraft and suspended business operations.

As of Monday afternoon, reports suggest that hair engineers continue to check the systems and restore full functionality. The company urged customers to check its Service Health Dashboard for the latest updates.

Arabian business contacted Amazon Web Services for comment but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
