These accounts all show tens of thousands of blocks in the last 24 hours like this post—more blocks than followers in most cases. Some, such as the office of the director of national humanities, find themselves counting less than a thousand followers. Most spent the weekend posting platitudes, and getting double-digit hits as users avoided bailing.
If the White House communicated with the people who might have planned all of this in the hopes that they would be able to produce more interesting content, it’s doubtful the largely muted response was worth their effort. That’s because bluesky blocking is public, visible, and built for value. Embedding will break. Reaction chains will trip. More bickering, conflict, and disrespect for understanding will quickly go down. The blocker and blockee will basically end up on each other’s person.
The tradition of blocking Bluesky also includes the use of block lists, a single purchase to block all accounts of another category or group with one tap. There is also, somewhat more, at least one block list for all users who interact with the White House account rather than simply block it. Many, many places that are banned in the network reduce the effect of the posting network on the platform, which seems to have led to the low ranking of a number of accounts associated with the most powerful person in the world.
Bluesky critics like Mark Cuba call Bluesky an echo chamber, and it’s hard to argue that it’s not entirely correct.
